The Root Cause

Why Factory Plastic Nuts Ruin Your Guitar

In over 90% of guitars suffering from tuning instability, the culprit isn't the tuning machines—it's a cheap, injection-moulded plastic factory nut:

Tuning “Ping” & Jumps

Cheap injection-moulded plastic grabs strings. When tuning up or bending, the string snags in the slot, jumps with an audible ping, and lands sharp or flat.

Choked Open Strings & Tone Loss

Soft plastic absorbs vibrational energy before it ever reaches the neck wood, leaving open chords sounding dull, muddy, and lifeless.

Premature Wear & Fret Buzz

Plastic wears down quickly under wound strings, causing strings to drop too low and rattle against the first fret on open strums.

Hollow Mold Cavities

Many factory nuts are hollow plastic shells underneath. A solid bone blank provides 100% direct mechanical contact with the neck timber.

Experiencing buzzing on fretted notes rather than open strings? Check whether your instrument requires The Complete Fret Service (£115) or review our diagnostic guides before booking.

The 4-Stage Workbench Protocol

Artisan Hand-Carving Bench Sequence

Each nut is shaped by hand from a raw solid blank specifically for your instrument's unique neck geometry:

1

Clean Extraction & Bed Prep

The existing factory nut is scored along finish lines and carefully extracted without chipping delicate neck lacquer or fingerboard binding. The nut slot floor is cleaned and trued dead flat with micro-chisels to establish total mechanical coupling.

When cleaning around delicate pegheads and tuner ferrules, ensure you avoid abrasive polishes—see our guide to preserving delicate lacquer with nitrocellulose-safe cleaners.

2

Custom Blank Profiling & Radius Matching

A premium, high-density unbleached bone or Graph Tech TUSQ blank is hand-dimensioned to fit the slot with zero lateral play. The top edge is profiled to precisely mirror your fingerboard's fret radius (7.25", 9.5", 12", or compound).

3

Precision Gauged Slotting & Ramp Angle

Using professional gauged Japanese nut files, string slots are cut to the exact diameter of your preferred string set (e.g., 9-42, 10-46, or 12-53). Each slot is cut with a downward ramp matching the headstock break angle, ensuring clean takeoff right at the front edge with zero string binding.

4

Mirror Polish, Lubrication & Action Calibration

Slot depths are calibrated under full string tension to leave exactly 0.3mm to 0.4mm clearance above the first fret, eliminating finger fatigue on open chords. The blank is burnished and buffed to a glass-smooth mirror polish, followed by micro-lubrication for silky tuning return.

Common Enquiries

Frequently Asked Questions

Why hand-carve a nut instead of buying a cheap pre-slotted replacement?

Pre-slotted nuts are generic approximations. Every guitar neck has slight variations in slot width, string spacing, and fret height. A hand-carved nut is bespoke: it is cut specifically for your neck's fret radius and your exact string gauge, ensuring optimal first-fret action with zero string buzz.

Will a bone nut fix my guitar going out of tune when I bend strings?

In over 90% of cases, yes. Most tuning instability is not caused by faulty machine heads; it is caused by the string binding in a tight, rough plastic nut slot. When you bend, the string pulls through the nut and gets trapped. A polished bone nut allows the string to glide smoothly and return to pitch every time.

Bone or TUSQ: Which should I choose?

Unbleached bone is the historic gold standard for warmth, bell-like clarity, and natural aesthetics. Graph Tech TUSQ is an engineered polymer with impregnated PTFE that excels if you use a vibrato/tremolo arm heavily. We keep both in stock and can recommend the ideal choice for your instrument.

Can I drop off my guitar in person?

The Complete Guitar operates as a private artisan workbench without an open public retail counter. For your convenience, we provide complimentary doorstep collection and return across Dundee.
