Diagnostic: Dry vs. Dirty Fretboards

One of the most common mistakes instrument owners make is confusing a dirty fretboard with a dry fretboard.

Applying oil to a dirty board seals the dirt and grime into the grain. Applying harsh cleaners to a dry board will accelerate cracking.

Whenever you go to clean your guitar:

1. The Visual Test

Dry: The wood appears pale, ashy, or chalky. In rosewood, the open pores may look unusually stark or white.

Dirty: The wood has dark, irregular patches, particularly concentrated right up against the metal frets where your fingers press down.

2. The Touch Test

Dry: Run your thumb down the edge of the neck. Do the metal fret ends feel sharp or prickly? This is "fret sprout" - a clear sign the wood has lost moisture and shrunk.

Dirty: The board feels slightly tacky or sticky, causing drag when bending strings.

What to do: Never apply conditioner to a dirty board. Always begin with Phase 1 (The Purifier). Use a microfibre cloth and a spray of Clarity Wash to emulsify and lift the "finger funk." Only once the board is completely clean and dry should you assess its hydration. If it looks pale and thirsty, proceed to Phase 2 (The Conditioner) and apply a few drops of Resonance Balm.
