Nitrocellulose & The Silicone Choke

If you own a vintage Gibson, a Fender Custom Shop, or a high-end acoustic, you likely have a Nitrocellulose (Nitro) finish. Luthiers revere Nitro because it is highly porous; it allows the tonewood to breathe, age, and resonate freely. But this porosity makes it incredibly fragile.

Nitro reacts violently to extreme temperature shifts (causing finish checking), prolonged contact with rubber guitar stands (causing chemical burns), and most dangerously, the silicone found in standard commercial guitar polishes.

The Problem With Silicone

Walk into any guitar store and pick up a cheap bottle of polish. Chances are, it's packed with synthetic silicones. Silicone is used because it provides a fast, frictionless, high-gloss shine with almost zero effort. However, because Nitro is porous, the silicone seeps deep into the clear coat and the wood itself.

Once silicone is in the wood, it creates a hazy, suffocating layer, we call this the "Silicone Choke". It dampens the natural resonance of the instrument. Worse, it makes future luthier repairs a nightmare. If your guitar ever needs a crack glued or a section re-finished, the silicone will actively repel the new glue or lacquer, causing the repair to fail.
