The Lemon Oil Myth

For decades, guitarists have reached for bottles of "Lemon Oil" to condition their fretboards. It smells great, it shines the wood, and it’s cheap. But from a luthier's perspective, it's a slow-motion disaster for your tonewood.

Most commercial guitar "lemon oils" contain very little actual lemon oil. They are primarily composed of cheap mineral spirits mixed with d-limonene, a highly acidic solvent extracted from citrus rinds. Limonene is an excellent degreaser (which is why it's used in kitchen cleaners), but it is a terrible conditioner.

When you apply limonene to an unfinished rosewood or ebony board, it starts stripping away the timber's natural oils. It creates a temporary, superficial shine that evaporates quickly, leaving the wood drier than it was before you started. Over years of repeated use, this chemical stripping causes the wood to shrink, leading to the dreaded "fret sprout" (where the sharp ends of the metal frets protrude from the sides of the neck) and, eventually, irreversible cracking.

Jojoba, in particular, is a liquid wax ester that closely mimics the natural lipid profile of the wood itself. It penetrates deeply, stabilizes the moisture content, and never leaves a sticky, acidic residue.
