How to Tell if Your Guitar Needs a Fret Level (Or Just a Setup)

Few things kill the joy of playing faster than fret buzz or notes that choke out mid-bend. When your guitar starts buzzing or fighting your fingers, the immediate fear is usually that the instrument is warped or requires hundreds of pounds of major workshop surgery.

On my workbench in Dundee, I look at guitars every single where the owner believes they need a major refret or that their neck is permanently ruined. Nine times out of ten, one of two things is actually happening:

  1. A standard setup issue: The neck relief has shifted due to a change of string gauge, seasonal humidity, the bridge saddles have settled, or the nut slots are dragging. This is easily solved at home in thirty minutes with a basic hex key.
  2. An isolated fret height discrepancy: One or two frets have lifted slightly from their slots, or years of playing have worn deep divots into the crowns. This requires a precision Fret Level, Crown, and Polish — not a full refret.

This diagnostic guide breaks down the physics of fret wear, gives you three practical home bench tests to isolate high or uneven frets, and explains how to tell whether a simple truss rod tweak will solve your problem or if it’s time to level and crown.


🔍 The Root Cause: Why Frets Go Out of Level

Guitar frets are made from nickel-silver alloy (or occasionally stainless steel) pressed and glued into slots in the wooden fingerboard. Even on premium custom-shop instruments, frets do not stay perfectly level forever for three distinct physical reasons:

1. Mechanical String Wear (Divots & Flat Tops)

Every time you press a hardened steel or nickel guitar string against a softer nickel-silver fret crown, microscopic amounts of metal wear away. Over months and years, this creates:

  • "Cowboy Chord" Divots: Deep valleys under the B and high-E strings on frets 1, 2, and 3 from playing open chords (D, C, G, Am).
  • Soloing Flat Spots: Flattened crowns on frets 12, 14, and 15 from aggressive vibrato and string bending.
  • The Result: When you fret a note in a divot, the string sits lower than normal and buzzes against the unworn, taller fret immediately ahead of it.

2. Wood Movement & Seasonal Fret "Sprout" or Lift

Wood is a living, hygroscopic material that continuously expands and contracts with changes in ambient humidity. In Scotland and across the UK, winter heating dries indoor air down to 25–30% relative humidity, causing the fingerboard timber to shrink. When the wood shrinks, fret tangs can lose their grip and unseat slightly (lifting a fraction of a millimetre out of the slot), or the metal fret ends begin to protrude past the edge of the neck (fret sprout). Even a fret that has lifted by just 0.05 mm (less than the thickness of a sheet of paper) can cause buzzing on the fret behind it.

3. Factory Inconsistency

Mass-produced guitars leave the factory quickly. Factory technicians level frets under tension approximations, but as the neck timber settles into its final playing tension over the first 6–12 months, individual frets often settle at slightly differing heights.

Before you spend money on fretwork or reach for abrasive tools, run these three diagnostic tests. They will tell you whether you have a neck adjustment issue or a physical fret issue.

Test 1: The Single-Note Isolation Test (The Chromatic Walk)

Tune your guitar to concert pitch using a high-precision tuner (such as our own free, strobe-accurate LuthierScan Pro).

Play every single note chromatically up the fretboard on one string, from fret 1 to fret 21 (or 24), listening carefully:

  • Symptom A (Setup Problem): The buzz occurs across an entire zone (for example, frets 1 to 5 buzz, but frets 7 to 15 sound clean).
    • Diagnosis: Neck Relief Issue. The neck is too flat or back-bowed. Loosening the truss rod a quarter turn anti-clockwise will add forward bow and clear the buzz.
  • Symptom B (Setup Problem): Notes buzz only in the upper registers (frets 12 to 21) across all strings.
    • Diagnosis: Bridge Action Too Low. Raise the bridge saddles by 0.25–0.5 mm.
  • Symptom C (Fret Level Problem): Fret 9 plays clear. Fret 10 buzzes heavily or sounds completely dead. Fret 11 plays clear again.
    • Diagnosis: High Fret at #11. Fret 11 is sitting taller than fret 10, physically blocking the string's vibration arc.

Test 2: The Bending "Choke" Test

Fret buzz during rhythm playing is annoying, but "choking" (fretting out) during string bends is a dead giveaway of fret radius and level discrepancies.

  1. Fretting your high-E string at the 12th fret, bend the note up a full step (two frets worth of pitch).
  2. Repeat this at the 14th, 15th, and 17th frets.
  3. Listen to the sustain:
    • Does the note sing cleanly throughout the bend?
    • Or does the note abruptly die out halfway through the bend?
  • Why it chokes: When you bend a string across a curved fretboard radius (especially vintage 7.25" or 9.5" radiuses), the string travels toward the higher centre of the fretboard. If the fret immediately ahead of your bent note is even slightly high, the string physically contacts it, instantly killing your sustain.
  • The Solution: A precision fret level and compound crown eliminates this high spot without forcing you to raise your string action to uncomfortable heights.

Test 3: The Fret Rocker Test (The Proof)

What every Luthier uses - the Fret Rocker.

A fret rocker is a precision-ground, flat triangular metal tool with edges of varying lengths (ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches). The straightedge must span exactly three frets at a time.

How to perform the test:

  1. Place the straightedge across frets 1, 2, and 3.
  2. Gently attempt to rock the tool like a see-saw using light finger pressure on alternating ends.
  3. If the tool sits perfectly flat across all three fret tops, the centre fret (fret 2) is level.
  4. If the tool rocks and "clicks", the centre fret is higher than its neighbours.
  5. Slide the tool up the neck: frets 2-3-4, then 3-4-5, then 4-5-6, spanning all the way up the fingerboard.
  6. Test across all 6 string paths (low-E, A, D, G, B, high-E).

Note: You don't need a £40 speciality tool to do a rough check at home; an unbent credit card or a short, flat machinist's ruler edge spanning exactly 3 frets will reveal obvious high spots.

⚙️ Fret Levelling vs. Complete Refret: What's the Difference?

Players often confuse a fret level (fret dressing) with a refret. They are completely different procedures in terms of scope, cost, and wood impact:

What happens: The existing frets are levelled with a precision beam, re-crowned to a rounded peak, and mirror-polished. All old frets are physically pulled from the fingerboard and brand new fretwire is installed and radiused.
When it's needed: 95% of playing issues: uneven frets, minor-to-moderate divots, factory imperfections, or lifted frets. Only when frets are so worn down that there isn't enough metal height left to crown (< 0.6 mm fret height).
Preservation: 100% original vintage fretwire and neck binding preserved. Removes original fretwire; requires risk of fingerboard chipping.

[!TIP] If your guitar has never had a fret level before, you almost certainly do not need a refret. Most factory nickel frets have enough height for 2 to 3 precision level-and-crown passes throughout the lifetime of the instrument before replacement is ever required.


🛠️ The 4-Stage Luthier Fret Dressing Protocol

When you bring or send an instrument to a professional workbench for a Fret Level, Crown, and Polish, here is what takes place:

STAGE 1: Neck Truing ──► STAGE 2: Precision Levelling ──► STAGE 3: Diamond Crowning ──► STAGE 4: Mirror Polish

Stage 1: Neck Truing & Fret Seating

Before touching an abrasive to any fret, the neck must be adjusted completely flat under zero string tension using a notched straightedge (a straightedge with cutouts that sits on the wooden fingerboard, bypassing the frets). Any loose or unseated frets are wicked with thin adhesive and clamped firmly into their slots.

Stage 2: Precision Beam Levelling

A precision-ground steel levelling beam loaded with graduated abrasive (320 to 600 grit) is passed lightly along the string paths. The beam knocks down the high spots until each fret crown lies in the same geometric plane.

Stage 3: Diamond Crowning (Restoring the Apex)

Levelling creates a flat top on each fret. If left flat, the guitar will buzz and suffer intonation problems because the string takes off from the back edge of the fret rather than the centre. The luthier uses specialised concave diamond crowning files to round the sides of the fret back into a delicate, rounded apex in the centre of the fretwire.

Stage 4: Micro-Mesh Mirror Polish & Hydration

The file marks are sanded out through progressively finer micro-abrasive grits (800 ➔ 1200 ➔ 2500 ➔ 4000 ➔ 8000), followed by a high-speed polishing wheel loaded with jeweller's rouge. The frets are transformed into glass-smooth, mirror-like finish reducing friction during string bends.

Finally, the bare timber is purified with Clarity Wash to strip polishing residue and nourished with Resonance Balm to seal the open grain.
