You've done it. I've done it. Most guitarists have done it at some point.
You notice your guitar creeping out of tune every time you bend a string or dig in hard with a pick. You decide the stock tuners are junk — and you order a set of locking machine heads. Gotoh, Grover, Schaller. £80 to £150 on a set of precision-engineered pegs, patiently swapped in over an evening. You string up, tune to pitch, and play.
Your guitar still goes out of tune.
I'm not going to make you feel stupid about that decision — the instinct makes total sense. If the guitar is drifting in pitch, and the pitch is set by the tuners, then the tuners must be at fault. But that's not how the physics works. And once you understand what is actually happening, you'll be able to diagnose the real cause in about two minutes — often fix it in about thirty seconds — and save yourself from repeating that £150 mistake (although your tuners look great!).
Let's talk about what a tuning head physically does, because this matters.
A modern worm-gear tuning machine uses a small worm shaft (the button spindle you turn) meshed with a toothed gear wheel attached to the string post. On a standard 14:1 tuner, every full rotation of the button equals one fourteenth of a turn at the post. This gives you fine, precise control when setting pitch, and it means the string tension on the post cannot physically drive the worm shaft backwards.
Think about a car's steering rack. You can turn the wheel to steer the car, but the resistance of the road doesn't suddenly turn the steering wheel by itself. It's a one-way mechanical relationship. Tuning machines work on the same principle. If the internal gear teeth are intact, the string literally cannot unwind the peg. The pitch set at the machine head does not move.
So if the tuners aren't the problem, where is the pitch going?
It's being stolen at the nut.
Here's what happens when your guitar refuses to stay in tune.
The nut is a small saddle sitting at the top of the fretboard, usually between 35 and 45 mm wide on a standard guitar. It has slots cut into it — one per string — and the strings travel through those slots from the machine heads on the headstock to the fretboard and bridge below. > Why does a guitar go out of tune when machine heads are not slipping?
Over 90% of guitar tuning instability is caused by string friction inside narrow or poorly cut nut slots, not slipping machine heads. When strings bind in the slots during bending, tension fails to equalize across the peghead. Hand-carving unbleached bone slots permanently eliminates string pinch.

The nut is, in short, a friction point. And friction is the enemy of tuning stability. When you tune up, you're increasing string tension on the headstock side of the nut. But the nut slot acts like a brake shoe. If the slot is rough, tight, or has a jagged, worn bottom, that friction holds the string back. The tension builds behind the nut while the string on the playing side stays slightly flat. Then, when the tension difference finally exceeds the static friction in that slot, the string jerks through with a sharp, audible ping — overshoots your target pitch and lands sharp. You tune back down. The string settles flat again. You're caught in a loop.
During a string bend, the problem works in reverse. When you bend a note at, say, the 12th fret, you're pulling extra string length from the headstock side, through the nut. When you release the bend, that borrowed string length needs to return back through the nut toward the headstock. Friction prevents it from sliding freely. The string stays slightly slack on the playing side.
Release a bend on a guitar with a binding nut and pluck the string. It will sound flat. Then reach over to the headstock and push the string forward from behind the nut — or give it a gentle upward wiggle over the nut — and it springs back in tune.

If that describes your guitar exactly, you don't need new tuners. You need your nut sorted.
Factory-fitted guitar nuts are manufactured for cost efficiency, not precision playability. They're machined from a blank that fits your guitar's width, then slotted to a generic specification that roughly approximates a common string gauge. Here's where they fall short:
Slot width vs. string gauge. Factory nuts are usually slotted for a light gauge set — typically 9-42 on electric, 11-52 on acoustic. If you play a heavier gauge, or if the slots were cut slightly narrow at the factory, your wound strings wedge themselves into the bottom of the V-shaped slot like an axe head in a stump. Every time the string bends, it jams harder. The slot may even dig its own grooves into the material over time, creating sharp-edged channels that grip rather than glide.
First-fret action and slot depth. The depth of each nut slot determines how high the string sits above the 1st fret when played open. Too high, and your open chords — C, D, F — feel heavy and fret sharp. Too deep, and open strings buzz against the 1st fret. Factory slots are often left too high to avoid warranty complaints about open-string buzz. The result is a guitar that plays harder than it should below the 5th fret.
Break angle and takeoff point. The slot needs to be cut with a gentle downward ramp toward the headstock so the string leaves the nut from the very front leading edge — the fretboard side — cleanly. If that takeoff point is flat or uneven, the string contacts the nut across a wide surface area rather than pivoting from a precise point. More friction. Sometimes a faint sitar-like rattle.
None of these are difficult to correct — but correcting them properly requires precision gauged files, a good eye for the fretboard radius, and careful removal of material in the right places. A factory machine cannot do this for your specific guitar, your specific string gauge, and your specific playing style. That's the whole point of a hand-fitted nut.

Not all nut materials perform equally, and the difference isn't subtle.
Factory injection-moulded plastic is soft, relatively gummy under steel string windings, and often hollow underneath to reduce material costs. That hollow underside deadens the acoustic energy transfer between the string and the guitar top. Your open strings lose resonance and sustain before the vibration ever reaches the soundboard. It also scores and gouges easily under wound string windings, creating those jagged grooves that grip rather than glide.
Solid, unbleached bone is the historic artisan standard, and it earns that reputation. Bone is dense, mineralised, and contains microscopic natural lipids — essentially it's self-lubricating. Steel strings glide through a well-polished bone slot with far less friction than plastic, and because the material is solid throughout, it transmits acoustic energy from the string straight into the neck with almost no absorption loss. Open strings on a bone nut ring differently. They have a cleaner attack, more sustain, and a bell-like harmonic richness that makes chords fuller. You'll notice it straight away.
Graph Tech TUSQ is a precision synthetic material infused with PTFE (Teflon) throughout its structure — not as a coating, but embedded into the material itself. This makes TUSQ exceptionally slick, with near-zero friction drag at the slots. It's the preferred option for players who use a tremolo arm heavily, where the string needs to slide freely on every push and return without snagging. For regular players with a fixed bridge, bone is generally the warmer, more tonally resonant choice. Both are a significant step up from factory plastic.
Before you book anything, try this.
Take a standard HB or 2B pencil and rub the tip firmly back and forth in each nut slot, coating the bottom and sides with graphite. Then re-tune to pitch, play through some bends, and see if the tuning ping disappears. Graphite is a dry lubricant — the same principle as PTFE, but from your pencil case. This is the first thing I reach for when a guitar comes in with a tuning complaint, and it works surprisingly often as a temporary fix.
If the graphite settles things down, that's your confirmation: the problem is friction. The nut is causing it. The pencil trick will get you through a gig or a recording session — but it needs reapplying, and it doesn't address the root geometry of the slot.
If you rub in the graphite and the string still pings, the problem is the slot is physically too tight for your string gauge, or the bottom has worn into a rough, jagged profile. At that point, material replacement is the only permanent fix.
A word of caution on pre-cut replacement nuts: I'd steer you away from buying a pre-slotted nut online and expecting it to drop straight in. Every guitar's fret height, neck radius, string spacing, and nut slot dimensions are slightly different — even two guitars of the same model from the same production run can vary enough to matter. A pre-slotted nut almost always sits too high at the 1st fret or rattles in the slot because the base isn't fitted to your specific neck pocket. You'll get a nut that technically fits but plays worse than the one it replaced.
The only route to a nut that truly works is one that starts as a blank and is shaped to your exact instrument.
This is the part I find genuinely satisfying — it's precision work that makes an immediate, audible difference.
The process starts with fitting the blank to the nut slot. The blank is shaped by hand — with small files and sandpaper — until it sits with zero wobble and zero gap on either side. The base is flat and the contact is even across the full width.
From there, the top of the nut is profiled to mirror the fretboard radius of your specific guitar. If your neck has a 9.5" radius (common on Fender instruments), the nut curve follows that arc so each string sits at a consistent clearance relative to its slot. Then the slots themselves are cut using gauged nut files — precision tools sized to match exact string diameters. The slot for your plain G string is not the same width as the slot for your wound A string. Each file matches the string diameter sitting in it, so the string seats fully but has no room to rattle or flex sideways.
The depth is dialled in to give approximately 0.35 mm clearance above the 1st fret — enough that open strings ring cleanly, low enough that the guitar plays easily right from the very bottom of the neck.
Finally, the nut gets a high-grit buff and burnish. The slot sides and floors are polished so the string glides with minimal resistance. That's what eliminates the ping. Not a coating. Not a lubricant. The geometry and surface finish of the material itself.
The whole process takes around 90 minutes on the bench. The result holds for years.
Start with the pencil test. Two minutes, costs nothing, confirms the diagnosis immediately.
Check your intonation before and after. If a tight nut has been pulling strings sharp behind the contact point, fixing it can shift your intonation slightly. Keep the timber healthy. As fretboard wood dries out over time — particularly during Scottish winters when central heating strips humidity from every room — the wood can shrink slightly around the nut slot, creating a tighter grip on the strings than when the guitar was built. Every string passes through it. Every note you play, open or fretted, is influenced by how well those slots are fitted to your strings. Get it right and the guitar rewards you immediately: cleaner open-string ring, effortless first-position fretting, bends that return to pitch without drama.
