Best Gifts for Guitarists (What a Luthier Actually Keeps on the Bench)

Published: 12 Oct 2026·Updated: 12 Oct 2026

By David Aitken · The Complete Guitar · Douglas, Dundee · DD4 8NN

Every December, well-meaning friends and partners ask me the same question: What should they buy for the guitarist in their life who already owns three Strats, twenty pedals, and an entire drawer full of plectrums? Buying guitar gear for someone else is a minefield. Buy strings, and you will almost certainly pick the wrong gauge. Buy a strap, and it will clash with their favourite finish. Buy a cheap novelty gift from an online marketplace, and it will sit in a dark drawer until spring cleaning.

I have spent years looking at what guitarists accumulate over the holidays.

A Dundee player came to me last January with an acoustic that sounded dull and felt sticky under the palm. Sitting in the pocket of his gig bag was a novelty multi-tool with plastic string winders, three pairs of metal guitar-shaped teaspoons, and an aerosol can of furniture polish that a relative had bought him for Christmas. The intention was lovely, but none of it was actually useful or good for his guitar. The polish had deposited a layer of silicone across his nitrocellulose lacquer that took me ages to decontaminate before I could even start measuring the action.

If you want to buy a present that a guitarist will genuinely use every single week, the secret is remarkably simple.

Do not guess their musical taste. Do not guess their string gauge. Give them high quality care products that protect their instrument without ruining the wood.

Why Most Guitar Stocking Fillers Fail

The guitar accessory market is flooded with novelty stocking fillers. You have seen them on mass-market websites: skull-shaped pick holders, plastic gadgets that promise to wind strings in three seconds, and novelty decorative wall hangers.

Most players will smile politely when unwrapping these items. They will say thank you. Then they will tuck the gadget into the bottom of a gig bag, or lose it in their junk drawer. It stays there forever.

Guitars are intimate, tactile instruments. Guitarists spend hundreds of hours dialling in their touch, their setup, and their tone. When someone hands them a generic plastic gadget, it rarely integrates into their daily routine.

The Sustainability Problem With Throwaway Novelties

Millions of cheap, injection-moulded plastic guitar novelties are mass-produced overseas from virgin plastics, sealed in disposable non-recyclable blister packaging, and shipped thousands of miles across oceans just to serve as momentary stocking stuffers. Within a few months, the vast majority of these throwaway plastic novelties end up directly in landfill. A guitarist does not need more short-lived, imported plastic cluttering their home.

Worse still are mass-produced commercial cleaning packs. High street shops stack their shelves with brightly coloured plastic bottles branded by multinational guitar companies. Most buyers assume that because a famous guitar brand put their logo on the bottle, the liquid inside must be ideal for every guitar.

As a luthier, I can tell you that the reality is quite different.

The Chemical Problem With Cheap Cleaning Sets

When you look at standard high street guitar polish, you are usually looking at two things: cheap mineral spirits and liquid silicone.

Silicone is an industrial shortcut. It creates an immediate, artificial high-gloss shine with almost zero elbow grease. Spray it on, wipe it off with a paper towel, and the guitar looks shiny for about an hour.

The catch is what silicone leaves behind.

It forms an impermeable chemical film over the wood pores and clear coat. On modern polyester finishes, it creates a greasy haze that smears under forearm heat and attracts household dust like a magnet. On delicate nitrocellulose lacquer—the vintage finish found on high-end Gibsons, Custom Shop Fenders, and heritage acoustics—silicone actually softens the finish over time.

If that guitar ever needs structural work, such as a bridge re-glue or a finish touch-up, silicone contamination creates an absolute nightmare. Wood glue cannot adhere to timber that has soaked up silicone oils.

BENCH WARNING · THE PETROLEUM LEMON OIL MYTH

The fretboard cleaners in generic gift packs are often worse. Most commercial lemon oil products do not contain cold-pressed botanical oils. They are 98% petroleum mineral oil cut with artificial citrus scent and yellow dye. Mineral oil does not nourish dry rosewood or ebony. It temporarily darkens the timber, then evaporates, leaving the timber parched and thirsty within weeks.

I refuse to keep commercial silicone sprays on my workbench in Dundee. I will not put them on a client's instrument.

What a Luthier Actually Keeps on the Bench

When an instrument arrives on my bench for a setup or service, I treat the timber with the same care a cabinetmaker gives to antique mahogany.

Wood is an organic, breathing material. Over winter in Scotland, cold outdoor air and indoor central heating dry out guitar fingerboards rapidly. The timber shrinks, the grain tightens, and the fret ends begin to poke out past the edge of the binding.

To solve this, I developed two specialised formulas for my own workbench in Douglas. I needed products that were safe for vintage nitrocellulose lacquer, completely free of silicone, and capable of providing deep cellular hydration to raw tonewoods.

Guitarists call it their secret weapon. Their partners call it the easiest Christmas gift they have ever bought.

The Complete Care Kit Gift Box

I hand-blend and bottle The Complete Guitar Care Kit (£18.99) directly in Dundee. It contains everything an acoustic or electric player needs to maintain their guitar in showroom condition without chemical compromises.

Inside the bespoke presentation packaging, you get:

1

Clarity Wash (50ml)

A plant-derived, non-toxic body cleaner that lifts gig grime, forearm oils, and sweat without stripping vintage nitrocellulose lacquer. It leaves zero residue, contains no silicone, and restores the natural tactile feel of the neck.

2

Resonance Balm (50ml)

A nutrient-dense botanical fretboard conditioner blended from pure cold-pressed botanical lipids. It drinks directly into parched rosewood, ebony, and pau ferro, restoring deep colour and flexibility without artificial mineral solvents.

3

Plush Workshop Microfibre Cloth

A heavy-gauge, lint-free cloth that buffs timber to a silky, natural lustre without scratching fine clear coats or leaving abrasive lint.

ARTISAN PRESENTATION BOX · UNDER £20

The Complete Guitar Care Kit (£18.99)

Handcrafted in Dundee: 50ml Clarity Wash, 50ml Resonance Balm, and plush workshop cloth. 100% silicone-free and nitro-safe.

Every bottle is poured by hand, sealed, and packed with clear bench instructions written in plain English.

How Players Use It on the Bench

Here is what happens when a guitarist unboxes this on Christmas morning.

First, they take their instrument and lay it flat on a clean table.

They take the bottle of Clarity Wash, mist two sprays onto the microfibre cloth, and gently wipe the back of the neck and the body face. The built-up grime from sweaty rehearsals dissolves quickly. When their hand slides across the wood, there is no greasy drag. The neck feels crisp, fast, and completely clean.

During their next string change, they reach for the Resonance Balm.

They put three small drops along the bare rosewood fingerboard. Using a clean section of cloth, they work the oil along the grain lines, between the nickel fret wire. If the guitar has sat in a dry centrally-heated room, the wood will literally drink the oil in before their eyes.

“A parched, grey-tinted fretboard turns a rich, dark chocolate colour in thirty seconds.”

The timber settles. The open pores relax. The fingerboard feels silky and fast under their fingertips, and it smells like pure natural botanical extract rather than an industrial chemical factory.

It takes five minutes, and it makes an instrument feel brand-new.

Finding Meaningful Stocking Fillers Under £20

If you are putting together a small gift bundle or looking for a standalone stocking filler, individual formulas are also available separately:

Ideal for players who gig regularly or own vintage instruments with fragile nitrocellulose finishes. Completely safe on matte, satin, and high-gloss guitars.

The complete apothecary presentation box containing Clarity Wash (50ml), Resonance Balm (50ml), and workshop microfibre cloth.

Local Dundee Guitarists and Workbench Service

If you live in Dundee, Broughty Ferry, or Monifieth, you also have the option of giving an experiential gift that transforms how an instrument plays.

A setup is the single best investment a player can make in their guitar. Even expensive instruments leave factories with generic medium action, roughly cut nut slots, and stiff neck relief.

In my Dundee workshop, I provide full bench calibration through our unhurried 3-Zone Service Booking Model:

Complete hardware disassembly, truss rod neck relief calibration, 12th-fret string action shaping, strobe tuner intonation, and fretboard hydration.

Bench restring, tuner post torque check, fretboard condition, and full body clean.

Precision fret levelling, re-crowning, and mirror polishing to eliminate buzz and string choke across all registers.

Complimentary Concierge Collection & Return

I work full-time during the day, so workshop repairs and setups operate strictly on evenings and weekends.

  • Zone 1 (Dundee DD1–DD4, Broughty Ferry DD5, Monifieth DD5 4): 100% complimentary doorstep collection and return. I collect the instrument from your doorstep in the evening, complete the bench work over the weekend, and return it ready to play.

  • Zone 3 (Wider Angus, Perthshire, Fife & beyond): Drop-off and collection arranged by prior appointment strictly outside the workshop at 33E Ballindean Road, Dundee, DD4 8NN.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Guitar Gifting & Care Kit FAQ

Straightforward answers on instrument care gifts, finish safety, and online ordering.

What is the best guitar gift under £20?

The Complete Guitar Care Kit (£18.99) is an ideal gift under £20. Hand-blended in Dundee, it contains plant-based Clarity Wash (50ml) for finish cleaning, Resonance Balm (50ml) for deep fretboard hydration, and a plush workshop microfibre cloth. It is 100% silicone-free and safe for all nitrocellulose, polyurethane, and acoustic finishes.

Why do commercial guitar cleaning gift sets damage instruments?

Most mass-produced guitar gift packs rely on mineral spirits and liquid silicone. Silicone forms an artificial, greasy film over finishes that smears under hand warmth and prevents future glue repairs. Furthermore, commercial lemon oil products are typically 98% petroleum mineral oil cut with artificial scent, which evaporates quickly and leaves tonewood dry and prone to cracking.

Are novelty plastic guitar gadgets good stocking fillers?

Most novelty plastic gadgets end up forgotten in gig bags or junk drawers. They are often cheaply manufactured overseas from virgin plastics and can damage delicate guitars. High quality, consumable care products and professional bench setups are practical gifts that musicians use regularly.

Can I buy guitar care gifts on eBay UK?

Yes. The Complete Guitar products are available directly through the web shop or via active eBay UK listings: The Complete Care Kit bundle (Listing 327061089671, £18.99), Resonance Balm (Listing 327343513497, £9.99), and Clarity Wash (Listing 327292790874, £9.99).
